Phil McFarren is President of McFarren Group —an organization he created after a 25-year career in the Tax and Public Affairs segments of USX Corporation—then the largest steel corporation in the world.  

He began his career as a special assignment news reporter for the Pulliam Newspaper Chain prior to taking over two special government affairs posts representing a broad array of business interests before joining USX Corporation.  

His experiences with USX included coordinating the tax compliance functions at the state and local levels of government as well as directing and coordinating the Public Affairs activities of the Corporation in the steel producing states of the corporation.  Phil is a noted specialist in budget and tax matters of local and state government and has often been consulted on resolving state fiscal problems in coordination with other industry peers and he was responsible for the overall coordination of the complete reform of the Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation program while with USX.

Phil is the past Executive Director of the Keystone State Railroad Association, which he formed in the mid-1990’s, and for many years he has been affiliated with numerous trade associations.  He is president of McFarren & Associates, a Harrisburg business advocacy firm.   He is of counsel to the Pennsylvania Energy Resources Group.

In recent years,  Phil McFarren has developed several global interests on behalf of McFarren Group and today he has an ongoing relationship with several alternative energy developers in various projects and an ongoing relationship with an Australian passive investment company.

Phil McFarren is a graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor degree in Mathematics/Physics and Journalism.

Paul has an extensive background in information technology and technology-related fields. A businessman first, his entrepreneurial nature has enabled him to apply this background in the context of management (including C-level) positions in mid-sized to large retail organizations, CEO of a software company and partner at McFarren Group.

Paul is well published, having written a number of white papers on the future of multi-channel retailing as well as critical synopses on the US corn-based ethanol market. He has served and is currently serving on the boards of several technology-focused companies.

He also has broad operational experience in managing company performance. In addition to managing Information Technology organizations for almost 20 years, he has led strategic business development for a number of organizations and directly managed most of the operational departments in a typical corporate organization.

Paul started his career with Andersen Consulting, managing projects in the Advanced Systems Group in San Francisco, California.  Upon leaving Andersen, he spent nearly seven years with Gap, Inc where he managed Gap’s corporate application portfolio.  Subsequently, Paul spent several years with LVMH-SDG as the head of their Worldwide IT Organization. 
Prior to starting Simply Retail Solutions and joining The McFarren Group, Paul was the Senior Vice President/CIO for United Retail Group, Inc., a $400+ million specialty apparel company with over 500 store locations.

Paul’s background includes significant business process re-engineering including: Store POS, Financial Management, Human Resources, Warehouse Management & Fulfillment and Real Estate Management.  He also specializes in enterprise-level PCI and Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance.

Paul graduated from Cornell University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering.
